Ana Mendieta
This major exhibition at Tate Modern explores the work of Ana Mendieta, the Cuban-born American artist whose practice transformed contemporary art through its engagement with the body, nature, displacement and identity. Bringing together iconic works, newly remastered films, early paintings and late sculptural pieces, many presented in the UK for the first time, the exhibition traces Mendieta’s experimental approach across different media. Her Silueta Series, in which the outline of the body is shaped into natural materials such as earth, fire, water and flowers, explores presence and absence through ephemeral interventions documented in photographs and films. Extending beyond the gallery walls, the exhibition also reflects Mendieta’s profound relationship with the natural world, highlighting the continuing relevance of her pioneering practice.
