Betty Parsons: The Queen of the Circus

Alison Jacques, 16 –18 Berners St, London W1T 3LN, UK

The first exhibition dedicated to Betty Parsons (1900 – 1982) at Alison Jacques Gallery focuses on her production during the 1960s and 1970s, with several paintings from this period and three important wood constructions, “Block House” (1970 – 1979), “Sultan” (1978) and “African Village” (1981).

The paintings and sculptures Parsons produced during her career are centred on abstraction and take inspiration from diverse sources: natural phenomena and the cosmos, Native American culture and Asian spiritual practices. The show offers a deeper understanding of Parsons’ rigorous and experimental artistic practice and her original take on abstraction that continues to be a critical component of twentieth-century modernism.
