Gathering works made over the last 10 years including several new commissions, many of which never shown in the UK before, “Act II: The Island” is the first major UK institutional exhibition by the Cypriot artist Christodoulos Panayiotou (b. 1978, Limassol, Cyprus). The exhibition surveys the breadth of the artist’s practice with a series of poetic spatial interventions.
“Act II: The Island” is named after one of the installations on view, a sort of theatrical backdrop depicting an exotic island, recalling both idyllic and disturbing feelings. Most of Panayiotou’s pieces address contemporary politic concerns, such as the approaching Brexit on one side, but also the conflicted situation of Cyprus, a former British colony, on the other.
