Eileen Perrier: A Thousand Small Stories
Since the 1990s, Eileen Perrier has used photographic portraiture to build connections between people, acknowledging the profound value of being seen, a practice now explored in this exhibition curated by Bindi Vora.
Often working in makeshift studios, she brings her sitters together through shared experiences—of kinship, interests or place. Over time, her practice has evolved into a form of social engagement that powerfully captures individuality, inviting us to see beyond social and cultural divides.
Drawing on both 19th-century European and contemporary African studio portraiture, Perrier explores how class, identity and belonging are expressed through the photographic image. Born and raised in London, she has often found herself navigating questions around her dual Ghanaian and Dominican heritage. This experience of in-between-ness sits at the heart of her work, reflecting how identity is shaped by both place and cultural context.
