Lily Cole: Balls

The Royal Academy of Arts, Burlington House, Piccadilly

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Emily Brontë’s birth, the Foundling fellow Lily Cole has created a new short film titled Balls, which takes as departure point the most famous novel by the English writer, “Wuthering Heights”.

The film is inspired by two intertwined stories: the one of Heathcliff, the main character of the novel, and the real lives of the desperate women and of the children they gave up to take care of The Foundling Hospital, accurately documented in the hospital’s archives. The film is accompanied by objects from the Brontë Parsonage Museum relating to the author and her inspiration and is shown also at the Brontë Parsonage Museum and as part of Culture Liverpool 2018.
