Nasser Al Salem: Amma Baad

Delfina Foundation, 29-31 Catherine Pl, London SW1E 6DY, UK

Nasser Al Salem (b. 1984, Mecca) challenges the boundaries of the traditional Islamic art of calligraphy, using unconventional mixed media forms to expand its conceptual potential.
In his first exhibition in the UK, Al Salem presents a new series of works exploring the relationship between language, time and space.
Curated by Maya El Khalil and presented in partnership with Shubbak Festival, “Amma Baad” comprises sculptural objects and works on paper; the Arabic phrase “amma baad” is difficult to translate in English but in Arabic follows initial salutations and greetings, while preceding and anticipating the main subject or story to follow. Embracing the metaphorical meaning of “amma baad” Al Salem plays with scale and materials to challenge and expand our perceptions of time and space.
