Robert Ryman: The Real Thing

Barbican Centre, Silk St, Barbican, London, UK

This major retrospective presents over 60 works by American artist Robert Ryman, spanning the mid-1950s to the early 2010s. Known for his predominantly white paintings and square formats, Ryman focused on the material and spatial conditions of painting, drawing attention to the texture of the paint, brushstrokes, supports and methods of display. The exhibition invites close observation of the subtle differences between works and the ways they interact with light and their surroundings, revealing how these elements shape the experience of a painting.
