Sophia Al-Maria: Beast Type Song

Tate Britain, Millbank, London SW1P 4RG, UK

Curated by Nathan Ladd, the exhibition at Tate Britain –  part of the exhibition series “Art Now” – premieres the artist’s new film “Beast Type Song“, a video where Sophia explores the relationship between language, education, and writing, though themes of identities, histories, cultures and the future.

“Beast Type Song“ features performances by Yumna Marwan, Elizabeth Peace and boychild, as well as Sophia herself.  The video was staged inside the former campus of Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, and it’s inspired by  Etel Adnan’s epic war poem “The Arab Apocalypse“.

The video is accompanied by an installation in the form of script pages, correspondence and photographs relating to the research and making of the work.
