Takesada Matsutani: Drop in Time
The exhibition dedicated by Hauser & Wirth Somerset to Japanese artist Takesada Matsutani includes both new and old works. Since the artist was part of the Gutai Art Association, elements of the group’s artistic practice are traceable in all his works, such as the performative component. Another characteristic signature of his style are circular, bubble-like forms from blobs of vinyl glue that he deposits on the surfaces of his canvases.
The artist presents here a large-scale, site-specific installation titled “Venice Stream”, already shown during the 57th Venice Biennale, in which the performative element is evident, besides a group of new paintings, a series of prints from his period at Atelier 17, during the 1960s, and some previously-unseen assemblages.
