Tim Etchells

In his solo exhibition, artist Tim Etchell fills the window of the gallery with a twelve-meter neon piece with the sentence “For everything that is shown something is hidden”, quoted from James Bridle’s book “New Dark Age”.  The letters that compose the phrase are alternately illuminated so to disrupt the continuity of the text: in this way, the full meaning of it unveils only to a closer look, when all the letters are readable.

Etchells displays also a series of photographs taken during the protests that greeted U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent visit to the UK, to document the signs carried by the protestors but portraying them from their back front. Etchells works across a broad range of mediums, including neon, performance and drawing but always keeping as main focus spoken and written text, to reflect upon ways of communication and the subtle relation between seen and unseen.
