Tony Cokes: If UR Reading This It’s 2 Late: Vol I
The first Uk solo exhibition by Tony Cokes, “If UR Reading This It’s 2 Late: Vol I”, offers a detailed insight into the practice of the US-based artist, gathering pieces from the 1980s, alongside two new commissions.
For the occasion, Cokes will produce two films, one of which specifically related to the context of the Goldsmith CCA: it will investigate the musicality of Kodwo Eshun’s Mark Fisher Memorial Lecture, occurred at Goldsmiths University in 2018. Mark Fisher was an academic and writer based at Goldsmiths, whose work researched the pervasiveness of capitalism through all the different manifestations of culture.
Cokes’ video works intertwine political and social issues with cultural theory, mixing a range of different inputs such as colour theory, sound, music and quotes, to report the social conditions, prejudices and threats suffered by black subjects.Janau
