Yayoi Kusama: The Moving Moment When I Went to the Universe
Victoria Miro gallery’s spaces in Wharf Road host the twelfth exhibition at the gallery of artist Yayoi Kusama, featuring new paintings along with iconic pieces and installations. Paintings from the celebrated and ongoing My Eternal Soul series are included in the selection, filled with the characteristic symbols of artist’s imaginary, like the usual dots, eyes and faces. The show features also new bronze pumpkin sculptures, revealing myriad of variations of this form and its pattern of repeated dots. Also the garden of the gallery is occupied by a series of large-scale, painted bronze flower sculptures, which reflect once more the dualism between the natural and the organic found throughout Kusama’s art. Finally, a new Infinity Mirror Room, the latest example of Kusama’s famous immersive environments, is installed in the gallery spaces, offering a sense of infinity through the interplay of the rhythmic patterns of colourful spots covering the black spherical lamps and the surrounding mirrors.
