Driant Zeneli The Trilogy: Beneath a surface there’s just another surface
The National Gallery of North Macedonia will host a personal show by Albanian artist Driant Zeneli.
The exhibition “The Trilogy: Beneath a surface, there’s merely another surface” is a multidisciplinary project by the well-known Albanian artist Driant Zeneli that includes three video installations, drawings, pre-made products and installations. Zeneli explores the concept of utopias and dystopias of the past and present in one of the video works entitled ‘It Would Not Be Possible to Leave Planet Earth Without Gravity Existed‘. The artist speaks of idealism and the promise of a better future in the old communist system against the obvious failures to realise it, contrasting them with the ideas, desires and failures of a single man, Mario, a contemporary of the artist, who wants to realise his desires and fly into space.
In all of Zeneli’s films, abandoned architecture has always been the backdrop for the action. In the second video, “And Then I Found Some Meteorites In My Room“, the artist explores the notion of infinity and the imagination of a better future through the two main characters.
Trans-history, politics, ghosts of the past, criticism, science fiction, the future and dreams are just some of the concepts included in the third part of the trilogy, “Maybe the cosmos is not so extraordinary“. The action takes place in the Bulqize mine, located in central Albania, and the artist talks about chrome mining, one of his country’s most important industrial and commercial activities. In this scene, Zeneli invents a fantastic story about the whole process of this activity as seen through the lens of a cosmic capsule discovered by a group of teenagers.
The installations of moving images are followed by visual descriptors such as drawings, a literary journey from Hysenbegas’ book ‘Towards the Epsilos of Eridan“, chromium-plated robotic hands, a piece of chromium ore, etc.
