Adictos a Remedios Varo. Nuevo Legado 2018

A significative collection of works by artist Remedios Varo was donated by Walter Gruen (1914-2008) and his wife Anna Alexandra Varsoviano (1927-2015) to the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBA) / Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in 2002. More recently, Anna Alexandra Varsoviano left in her testament to the museum part of the general archive of the artist. The exhibition “Adictos a Remedios Varo. Nuevo Legado 2018 (Addicted to Remedios Varo. New Legacy 2018)” celebrates this bequest and its first rearrangement within the museum collection.

On view sketches and preparatory drawings by the artist, oil paintings, gouaches, an acrylic, an offset print and three works by other authors. It also shows pre-Hispanic pieces, photographs, documents, books and objects from Varo’s personal belongings. The selection highlights traits of Varo’s personality as well as her exchanges with intellectuals of her time but also records her arrival in Mexico from Europe in 1941, documenting immigrants’ living conditions during Second World War.
