Chavis Mármol: Candy Shop
“Candy Shop”, a series of works created by Chavis Mármol, represents a moment of reflection within his practice. Ten years after his first foray into using pecositas sweets as a material, colour appears as excess, accumulation, and language, in contrast to the heavy, industrial materials that have characterised much of his production.
The sweets, encapsulated in resin, are frozen in time. They allude, perhaps, to the corner shop as an everyday space and to immediate desire, but also to the tension between the popular and the formal, between play and the conscious construction of the work.
Presented at Galería Latinou, the exhibition seeks to activate a sensory and cultural memory that continues to operate in the present. This return to colour becomes a way of rethinking materials, processes, and meanings within the artist’s trajectory.
