“Nobody Will Believe the Fire If the Smoke Gives No Sign. Living Archive of Bodies in Protest and Symbolic Disputes in Latin America” is an exhibition project curated by Javier Zugarazo and the magazine Chiquilla te quiero, which brings together six cases of mobilisations in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.

Based on the mapping of artistic and cultural expressions carried out by Chiquilla te quiero, which document contemporary political and social conflicts in these six countries, this exhibition becomes an expanded archive that can be visited in the museum’s bookstore.

From the Chilean constituent process; the reflection and decolonial movements of the cholas in Bolivia; Argentine affective and political protests with continental projection; the victims of Nicaraguan state violence; the Guatemalan national strike against attempts to block Bernardo Arévalo’s inauguration; to a reflection on migrant caravans in Mexico, the exhibition presents and reflects on some of the artistic and political actions carried out in these contexts.

Each case is displayed with visual documentation and a fanzine, created in coordination with the participating collectives. “The goal is to foster reflection on how protest movements employ diverse strategies. It’s not only the body in the streets, but the body making itself visible and contesting the symbolic power of the State,” the curator emphasised.
