Circe Irasema: Dreams of Painting Produce Monsters

The exhibition is a critical study of the technical, conceptual, and compositional values of the mural painting by David Alfaro Siqueiros. Circe Irasema’s work is based on an examination of the foundations and political structure of mural and easel painting, primarily in Mexico. In Irasema’s view, this political structure has had a teratological character—monstrous in relation to 20th-century Mexican mural painting—and dominant in its hegemonic participation by male artists over several decades.
