Daido Moriyama: Lips 2004
Sonora 128, a billboard exhibition space in the heart of Mexico City presents in collaboration with kurimanzutto the exhibition “Lips 2004” by Daido Moriyama. The artist is one of Japan’s leading figures in photography and is considered a kind of avant-garde hero, garnering worldwide acclaim for his work as the father of street photography.
Influenced by Kerouac’s “On the Road”, Moriyama in his images reflect the landscape of a cerebral vagabond, swept into the current of the present while straddling visions of the past.
After Tokyo, Osaka, Buenos Aires, Paris, Sao Paulo or New York. For the fourth itineration of Sonora 128, his work investigates Mexico City.
In the city he presents a version of Lips (2004), that forms part of an ongoing lip series and personifies the artist’s fascination with the raw, sensuous and erotic, particularly as these ideas project on the urban landscape through memory. This image exemplifies the delirious intoxication that pervades his practice with its burning fantasies and embattled dreams.
