Delcy Morelos: The Womb Space
Delcy Morelos (Tierralta, Colombia, 1967) is a leading Colombian artist whose work spans painting, installations, and site-specific interventions that blend land art and minimalism. Her project for MUAC inaugurates a new line of commissioned pieces in Gallery 9. Drawing on visits to Mexico City, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, she created “The Sculptural Space,” a circular installation of 64 triangular prisms surrounding volcanic rock from Xitle, connecting interior and exterior spaces while evoking the Earth as a maternal womb. Complementing this, “The Womb Space” transforms visitors into guests rather than spectators, with aromas from cornfields reinforcing local culture. Morelos’ work explores human relationships with land, food, myth, and divinity, reflecting cycles of life, death, and exploitation. Inspired by pre-Hispanic circular structures, shaft tombs, land art, arte povera, and architecture—including Cuicuilco and the UNAM Sculptural Space—her installations provoke sensorial, mystical, and reflective experiences, reformulating our connection to the Earth. Curated by Alejandra Labastida and Daniel Montero.
