Desaparecidos
“Desaparecidos” is an installation that consists of 20 thousand identical figurines with the shape of a young man in his underpants and his hands up. This image was taken from a newspaper photograph depicting the students imprisoned in the Chihuahua building of the Tlatelolco housing complex, on October 2, 1968 in Mexico City.
“Desaparecidos” is derived from the exhibition proposal “Hoy también fue un día soleado” by Fernando Sánchez Castillo, in which the same figure was exhibited but in monumental dimensions. Arranged horizontally, these figurines open an opportunity for each visitor to make an exchange: provide a written testimony on self-adhesive paper, adding to the relative memory of the events of October 2, 1968 or its echoes in the recent history of Mexico. Within the framework of the 50th anniversary of the massacre of civilians by the government of Díaz Ordaz in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, the Tlatelolco University Cultural Center calls to recall and reflect on these events.
