El Ojo Desarmado
The exhibition aims to make visible the existence of a patriarchal system that oppresses women and other minorities outside the heterosexual Western white male, giving rise to a fully naturalised rape culture. It proposes to disarm a gaze laden with sexist filters and conditioning, in order to construct a new and autonomous one.
Patriarchy is a tentacular superstructure; a chameleon that adopts the appearance of its surroundings in order to go undetected; a die with many faces that share the same core of domination and violence. The projects point to this well-oiled mechanism and indicate where responsibility must be directed, proposing a 180-degree shift in the way rape culture is addressed: moving the focus from victims to perpetrators, and to the regime of thought that has sustained violence from its origins to the present.
The exhibition presents the works of Cristina Lucas (Jaén, 1973), Regina José Galindo (Guatemala, 1974), Valeria Andrade’s (Ecuador, 1973), Olalla G. Valdericeda’s (Madrid, 1982), Núria Güell’s (Vidreras, Girona, 1981), Shoja Azari’s (Iran, 1958), David Martín (Palma, 1978), Marta Pujades (Palma, 1990) and Arantxa Boyero’s (Palma, 1982).
“El Ojo Desarmado” not only points to deeply entrenched problems, but also proposes ways of deactivating harmful patterns and fostering healthy understandings of masculinity for all genders.
