Folkert De Jong: Las Chicas de Aviñón
Laguna de Términos 260, Col. Anáhuac
Folkert de Jong (1972, lives and works in Amsterdam, NL) is internationally known for his sculptures made of polyurethane foam and expanded polystyrene–high-tech chemical materials normally used for thermal insulation in the construction field, production industry and for household tools. The bright colors and lightweight of the foam sculptures deliberately disconcert the viewer by an apparent light-heartedness that is at odds with their more serious subject matter. De Jong’s grotesque figures, often inspired by art historical subjects, are an unorthodox means of spotlighting issues of morality and self-destruction.
For this exhibition, De Jong was inspired by Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1906-7).
