Gabriel Orozco: Politécnico Nacional
Museo Jumex presents Gabriel Orozco: “Politécnico Nacional”, the artist’s first museum exhibition in Mexico since 2006.
Renowned as one of Mexico’s most influential contemporary artists and a pivotal figure in international art for over three decades, Orozco continuously redefines the boundaries of art—exploring its creation, purpose, and possibilities.
In the early 1990s, Orozco developed a unique creative approach, using local, readily available materials—often found or prefabricated—to craft spontaneous sculptures and photographs. His diverse use of media and processes reflects the specific places and moments in which his works are conceived, imbuing them with a sense of immediacy and context.
Curated by Briony Fer in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition traces recurring themes in Orozco’s practice, such as rotation, symmetry, and the materialization of time, offering fresh perspectives on his work. It brings together approximately 300 pieces, encompassing a wide range of mediums—from small-scale sculptures to complex installations, photography, drawing, painting, assemblages, and even interactive games.
Rather than serving as a definitive retrospective, the exhibition highlights key turning points in Orozco’s career, exploring how his multifaceted practice has evolved and expanded. It reflects a moment of artistic renewal, where the various threads of his work continue to interconnect and innovate.
