Guillermo Gómez-Peña. Mexican (IN)documentado

Museo de Arte Moderno – MAM, Av. Paseo de la Reforma S/N, Miguel Hidalgo, Bosque de Chapultepec I,

“Mexican (IN)documentado” is the first solo show in Mexico dedicated to the pioneering artists of performance, now internationally recognized Guillermo Gómez-Peña. Born in the Nueva Santa María neighborhood in Mexico City, he moved to Los Angeles at only 23 years old to study at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). With dual citizenship, he experienced processes of uprooting and he tried to express the misunderstandings and contradictions in the Latin experience in the United States. He denounced the contempt for Chicanos, not only of Anglo-Saxon ethnocentrism, but of the Mexicans themselves. “Through the Chicanos I discovered that my art could be the ideal means to explore and reinvent my multiple and changing identities (something that would have been unthinkable in Mexico at that time),” he observes. “Mexican (IN)documentado” invites the public to understand and enjoy the scope of his performance work through more than 150 works: costumes, videos, photo-performance, installations, documents, texts and paraphernalia from his studies in Mexico City and San Francisco, California, and that live again in his legendary alias: Border Brujo, Mad Mex and Mexterminator, among others.
