Gunther Gerzso: Algo en comùn con el pasado
The exhibition by Gunther Gerzso brings together 47 works by the Mexican painter and sculptor (1915–2000), some little known, created between the 1950s and 1990s, alongside 24 works by modern and contemporary artists, including Helen Escobedo, Francisco Castro Leñero, and Graciela Iturbide. Gerzso once said to poet Luis Cardoza y Aragón that “without the pre-Hispanic past my painting would not exist,” and his work can be understood as “relating to the past while looking to the future.” The exhibition explores his landscapes such as “Spaciale” (1959) and “Paisaje clásico” (1960), his geometric and tactile treatment of stone in works like “Grieta” (1992), as well as his stage design, including a fragment from “El bolero de Raquel” (1957). Dialogues with contemporary works by Andrea Zittel, Jorge Méndez Blake, José María Ximénez, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Abel Quezada, and Arcangelo Ianelli reveal how Gerzso’s abstract, geometric, and spatial approach remains profoundly relevant today.
