Haegue Yang: Arcane Abstractions
Haegue Yang’s “Arcane Abstractions” at kurimanzutto, Mexico City, showcases seven bodies of work alongside an archival display of historical documents and references. The exhibition features a wide range of pieces, including wallpaper totem collages, woven ceremonial sculptures, her signature blind works, flat canvas compositions, and cut-paper works from the “Mesmerizing Mesh” series.
Utilising kurimanzutto’s architectural layout to organise the works into quadrants, the show emphasises Yang’s engagement with global craft traditions, ritualistic forms, and vernacular techniques. Highlights include Mexican-crafted interpretations of Shinto shimenawa ropes and a hanging Didukh inspired by Ukrainian and Slavic harvest traditions.
The exhibition concludes with an archival presentation tracing Yang’s study of paper-cutting customs from Korea, Poland, the Philippines, and Mexico, creating a richly layered dialogue between tradition, material experimentation, and contemporary art.
