Kazuya Sakai: Painting Design Critic Music
This exhibition, curated by Daniel Garza Usabiaga, is the first retrospective dedicated to Kazuya Sakai in Mexico.
The exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) presents the work of Kazuya Sakai following four thematic clusters: “From New York to Mexico” focuses on the artist’s investigation of the use of color, with references to his 1960s production; “Plural”, a section dedicated to the artist’s work as one of the members of Plural Magazine; “Undulations”, with frames and colors alluding to music and suggesting kinaesthetic qualities; and “Sakai and the Mexican geometries”, presenting his work as curator and follower of Latin American trends.
Sakai arrived in Mexico in 1966, and was hired as a teacher by El Colegio de México. During his stay of 11 years he worked for Plural magazine and at the same time developed other projects: he worked as driver programmer and for specialized radio programmes, he was a designer of sets, costumes and album covers, as well as a curator and art critic.
