Lili Reynaud-Dewar: Paul-Alexandre, Bekim, Sasha, Víctor, Philippe, Louis, Thomas, Pierre y Lili
Curator: Dorothée Dupuis
Artist: Lili Reynaud-Dewar
In her first monographic exhibition in Mexico, Lili Reynaud-Dewar presents thirteen video works, adapted to the venue. Eight were produced in 2023, further exploring her interest in the construction of masculinity, while five others were filmed in the offices and exhibition spaces of the LAA during the installation of her show.
The core of the project lies in portraits of various masculinities, created through a systematic methodology of interviews with her close circle of friends, family, and students—an endeavour she views as both artistic and documentary. The hotel rooms where these interviews take place also serve as a 2020s Paris archive, reflecting Reynaud-Dewar’s belief in art as an anthropological tool for future generations.
The videos also engage with recurring themes in her work, such as the role of the artist, navigating the space between private life exposure and the increasing subjectivity of public life. Reynaud-Dewar addresses the complex relationships between gender, class, and race, particularly in the context of sexual dissidence and activism.
The sequence of portraits is complemented by five videos filmed during the exhibition’s installation, where Reynaud-Dewar dances naked in the LAA’s exhibition spaces. In doing so, she confronts the colonial architecture of the museum and the works of other artists, asserting her own joyful solitude and vulnerability as a form of resistance to the world’s overwhelming pace.
