In a world defined by the circulation of banknotes which have a representative value in gold stored in bank’s vaults, Mauricio Limón’s project “Pagará a la vista al portador” (This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private) explores how bills are turned into a legitimate agent of a physical asset that could be used for economical exchange.

By digitally deleting every recognisable element – such as numbers, depictions, phrases or portraits – out of the surface of banknotes, Limón allows the detailed ornamental and colourful design structure of the background to emerge.
