Nancy Spero: Paper Mirror

Museo Tamayo, Paseo de la Reforma 51, Bosque de Chapultepec, Miguel Hidalgo

For her first significant exhibition in Mexico, Museo Tamayo displays works by New York-based Nancy Spero which cover fifty years of her art. Having embraced the feminist cause, her practice aims to claim social justice and equity for women. Through her subjects, Spero has been building an archive of characters, inspired by different eras and cultures and replicated throughout her pieces, which act as female protagonists of her works.

Spero begun as figurative painter in the early 60s, portraying archetypical lone figures and lovers, representative of her isolation as a woman artist. The horrors of the war in Vietnam are expressed in her works on paper, based on a lexicon of brutal figures and symbols. Keeping in breaking boundaries and conventions through her art, in the late 80s the artist begun to exhibit installations directly on gallery and museum architectures.
