Roberto Montenegro: Expresiones del Arte Popular Mexicano
On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the birth of the Jalisco artist Roberto Montenegro (1887-1968), “Expresiones del Arte Popular Mexicano/Expressions of Mexican Folk Art” presents two general aspects in a couple of thematic sections. In the first, a series of pieces from the collection of popular art that Roberto Montenegro collected by government commission from the twenties of the twentieth century. In a second section, the exhibition presents the publications that reveal the initiatives and contributions of Roberto Montenegro in favor of the values of popular art, as his passion and knowledge in this field activated the interest of society for this aesthetic manifestation. of the Mexican culture.
This select repertoire of popular art objects is part of the set of crafts that now bears the name of Roberto Montenegro and that protects the National Institute of Fine Arts (Inba). Likewise, works staged by the creator that expose these peculiarities in other cultural contexts are presented in this montage. His artistic production of the first half of the twentieth century shows an ornamental preciosity that emanates from pre-Hispanic motifs and popular art.
