Somos Pacífico

The result of an international and interinstitutional collaborative effort, this exhibition originates from the “Manila Galleon” exhibition at the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore and is here enriched with new works.

With this exhibition, the Colegio de San Ildefonso wishes to recall the five hundred years of intense commercial, biological and cultural exchange experienced from the New Spanish past to the present day. Central focus is given to the relationship with Asia, which is neither new nor fortuitous, but rather forms part of the foundations of collective identity.

“Somos Pacífico” also presents a selection of Southeast Asian artists who, throughout the twentieth century, asserted their legitimate place within the history of art as a means of reclaiming their cultural heritage, in which the “tropical” becomes a site of identity.
