Yvonne Venegas: Drama Mexicano
After working with actors for her previous projects, the artist has turned her gaze to the spaces that these bodies occupy: where they learn, rehearse, and perfect their craft, and where plays are presented. In the interest of connecting photography and theatre, Venegas focuses on the idea that the present moment is where the two find each other, and explores the documentary possibilities of this connection as the underlying core of the project.
What is revealed through her exploration of these black boxes, and the use of low light, is darkness and shadow as subject: places where energies have been invested in the creation of fiction, with all the human emotions and transformative possibilities that this quest allows. The portraits included in the show are moments that might be taken from fictional stories, from rehearsals, or from theatre archives – instants that reveal other forms of darkness.
