AfriCOBRA: Messages to the People

The group exhibition celebrates the work of the art collective AfriCOBRA, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the birth of the movement. AfriCOBRA, which stands for African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists, begun in Chicago in 1968, from the initiative of artists Jeff Donaldson, Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu, and Gerald Williams. From the beginning, the current’s founders defined a characterising aesthetic, based on the use of texts, bright colours, gestural marks and images of confident black figures. The exhibition offers an insight into the founders’ careers, featuring also artists who exhibited within the AfriCOBRA movement between 1968 and 1973.
