Alexandre Diop: Back to Basics

The exhibition features new works that uniquely combine abstraction and figuration. For this exhibition, Alexandre Diop is revisiting the birthplace of his artistic practice, the city of Berlin, to be the inspirational center.

The artist’s works bridge painting and sculpture and occupy a space that allows him to experiment with definitions of object versus image. Diop builds artworks from materials commonly found in his everyday surroundings – metal, wood, textile, latex, animal fibers, burnt materials, leather, rope, plaster, old car parts, rust, books, photographs, etc. Materiality is a technical expression of his investigations that also interpret music, film, and literary influences. His spontaneous process focuses on composition and decomposition, revealing answers about the entanglement of art, and life, and bringing to the fore notions of existence and conscious observation; he considers the basics of human interaction and his own artistic trajectory. Diop presents himself as an observer of history and contemporary society – a citizen of the world who acknowledges the realities surrounding him.
