Cuban Caricature and Culture: The Art of Massaguer

Hosted at The Wolfsonian–FIU, Miami, the exhibition honors the Cuban graphic artist Conrado Walter Massaguer (1889–1965), a key figure in shaping the visual culture of his native country between the 1920s and the 1950s. Cuban Caricature and Culture: The Art of Massaguer highlights the international extent of Massaguer’s work, including dozens of images, such as his illustrations for the magazine “Social” and the Cuban Tourist Commission; his covers for “Collier’s” and “Life” and his cartoons of remarkable political personalities or film celebrities.
The exhibition is complemented by the installation “Cover Girls”: The Wolfsonian’s exterior south facade displays two of Massaguer’s covers for “Social” along with two reinterpretations of the same graphics by the Miami artist Andres Conde.
