Hank Willis Thomas: Unbranded

The exhibition brings together a selection of works by Hank Willis Thomas (b. 1976, Plainfield, New Jersey lives and works in Brooklyn, New York) including the artist’s two “Unbranded” series. With his images the artist investigates the cultural stereotypes they reinforce and the forms of inequality they propagate.
He explores issues of identity, race, class, and media and popular culture to highlight their subliminal structures of racial prejudice.

Unbranded: Reflections in Black by Corporate America, 1968–2008” (2008) features imagery from print advertisements directed toward an African American audience of the past fifty years, while “Unbranded: A Century of White Women, 1915–2015” (2015) focuses on images constructing notions of beauty, privilege, and virtue.
