Marta Chilindron: Temporal Systems
Alejandra von Hartz Gallery presents the second solo show at the gallery by Marta Chilindron: Temporal Systems.
The exhibition features previously created and new multidimensional sculptures by Chilindron, including a large scale new piece. All they are acrylic kinetic constructions made of sheets of the transparent material in clear and bright colors. The panels of the sculptures are hinged allowing movement and manipulation, subject to be transformed and activated by the viewer in a wide variety of configurations.
These new pieces are consistent with Chilindron long term fascination with the relationship of three-dimensional volume to the two-dimensional plane, while reflecting her continued exploration of basic geometric forms, color, transparency, light, space, time and perspective.
The artist began experimenting with modular forms at the end of the 1970s, producing wood sculptures of simplified furniture forms that collapse in space. She intended to reflect her point of view in relation to her body in real space. In those works she was dealing with objects of daily life and the centrality of the human body in relation to the surrounding domestic environment.
In the 1990s, she worked alongside artist Eduardo Costa on conceptual projects that included public interventions and experiments with paint, such as creating garments made out of dried acrylic paint. By the end of the decade, her objects evolved to reflect her current focus, using geometry and familiar forms “to question the accuracy of our perception, our interpretation of reality. My works contain a potential for an action and a reverse action, as if turning back time. The material of my preference is acrylic, due to its transparency. I laser cut and assemble it with hinges that provide me with the instability I seek for. I have tried to capture the state of flux of everything.” (Marta Chilindron, 2015).
