Project Gallery: Robert Rauschenberg

Drawing entirely from PAMM’s collection, this exhibition presents a series of works by American master artist, Robert Rauschenberg (b. 1925, Port Arthur, Texas; d. 2008, Captiva, Florida)— who lived in Captiva Island, Florida, for over 35 years and whose legacy influenced the artistic development of South Florida.

Rauschenberg is celebrated internationally for incorporating mass media to modern-day culture. In the 1950s, he began to create sculptures and paintings using images taken from newspapers, magazines, and postcards that exemplified mainstream Western culture of the mid-20th century. He worked with found objects such as clothes or cardboard boxes, producing unique works that have elements of drawing, painting, and sculpture.

Rauschenberg developed new techniques which can be appreciated through PAMM’s exceptional holdings. Project Gallery: Robert Rauschenberg illustrates the artist’s innovative art-making approach and ingenious artistic range, showcasing his position PAMM’s permanent collection.
