Richard Hunt: Pressure

ICA Miami presents “Richard Hunt: Pressure”, the first posthumous US institutional survey of the sculptor. The exhibition traces Hunt’s innovative approach to form, scale and material over more than five decades, bringing together large bronze and stainless-steel works with more intimate sculptures and maquettes that directly engage with the Civil Rights movement and wider themes of social justice.

A master of monumentality, Hunt forged a singular sculptural language in metal—Cor-Ten and stainless steel, aluminium and bronze—creating abstract forms that are fluid, biomorphic and precise. His early works transformed found materials into complex compositions exploring extension and motion, while subtly addressing the social realities of segregated America. Drawing on nature, mythology and cultural heritage, his practice reflects both personal narrative and the broader evolution of modern sculpture.

ICA Miami’s presentation includes twenty-five works from the 1950s to the 1990s. Key pieces such as “Opposed Linear Forms” (1961), “Linear Peregrination” (1962), “Hero’s Head” (1956) and “I Have Been to the Mountain” (1977) reveal the breadth of his concerns—from spatial drawing to historical memory and public monumentality.
