Stratified Gestures
Dimensions Variable (DV) presents “Stratified Gestures”, a group exhibition spanning all the gallery spaces. Participating artists include Karla Kantorovich, Nicole Burko, Yanira Collado, Regina Jestrow, Jamilah Sabur, Bruno Castro Santos, Jenene Nagy, and Gerbi Tsesarskaia.
The exhibition explores the creation of layers in art, connecting them to themes of natural, urban, and social stratification. Through photos, paintings, geometry, collage, ceramics, and mixed media, the exhibition recreates the American West’s layered landscapes, evoking the humbling passage of time.
Geological landmarks in the American West reveal millions of years of layering, hinting at the inevitable decay of everything into strata. This concept inspired “Stratified Gestures”, reflecting both natural and human-made layers and our impact on them.
From a geological perspective, stratification refers to the horizontal layering of materials like rocks, soil, or ice, formed through settling particles, glacial melting, or slumping. Urban stratification is similar, as cities evolve with new buildings over old ones—like in Rome, where ancient ruins lie beneath modern structures. Economic stratification divides society into classes based on economic status, shaping social relationships and power dynamics.
