William Kentridge : Glyphs
Goodman Gallery present an exhibition of bronze glyphs from William Kentridge‘s ongoing Lexicon project, featuring a new sculpture in the series.
Lexicon is a sculptural vocabulary made up of symbols or ‘glyphs’, a repertoire of everyday objects, suggested words or icons that are ubiquitous in the artist’s broader practice. The glyphs started as ink drawings and paper cut-outs, each on a single page from a dictionary. The drawings were then transformed into bronze, to embody the weight and character that their shapes on paper suggested. Several pieces from Lexicon, Paragraph II and Cursive were scaled-up into medium-sized bronzes, where the curvature of an ampersand or the character of a camera in action is celebrated.
