Arman: Emersions
The solo show at Cardi Gallery presents unreleased works by the French artist Arman, which are on display for the first time since their creation in 1998-99.
The works display a new approach to painting, featuring objects that drew on Arman’s attention as a young man in Nice, being inspired by the exhibition “Allure d’objets” at Galerie Saint Germain, Paris, in 1960.
The artist plays with the two contrasting concepts of emersion and immersion – linked to the emergency of arising, almost escaping, from liquid surroundings to the surface and grasping for air. The objects painted by Arman seem to emerge from the bottom of the sea, being recovered from a shipwreck. The artist himself states that many works within this series refer to natural disasters, as river floods and vulcano bursts. He has however embedded a deeper significance within his paintings, as if it was wrong for the human being to oppose nature.
The exhibition is realized in collaboration with the Arman Marital Trust & Corice Arman Trustee.
