Chiharu Shiota: The Moment the Snow Melts
The site-specific installation “The Moment the Snow Melts” by Chiharu Shiota transforms the Agora space into an immersive environment composed of vertically suspended threads that evoke a fragile, snow-like landscape. Within this network of threads float notes and pieces of paper bearing the names of people who have been part of visitors’ lives but can no longer be encountered, suggesting the persistence of memory and the passage of time.
Visitors are invited to contribute to the installation by sharing thoughts or drawings related to the theme, either by leaving them in a box in the museum or by submitting them digitally. These contributions become part of the evolving work, reinforcing its collective and participatory dimension.
Through the ephemeral metaphor of melting snow, Shiota reflects on the nature of human relationships and their inevitable transformation. The threads symbolise bonds that gradually fade, while the names written on paper act as reminders of individuals who remain present in memory even after absence. The installation proposes a contemplative space where visitors can reflect on loss, remembrance and the cycles of emotional experience.
The project is curated by Sara Rizzo with the support of 24 ORE Cultura.
