Fantasmagoria Callas
The Teatro alla Scala celebrates the legendary Maria Callas 100 years after her birth with a special exhibition project featuring five voices from the contemporary art scene: Giorgio Armani, Alvin Curran, Latifa Echakhch, Mario Martone and Francesco Vezzoli.
The exhibition, curated by Francesco Stocchi with exhibition design by Margherita Palli, explores the legend of Maria Callas through different media and languages, forming a portrait of a complete artist whose unique blend of singing and acting made her a timeless icon, inspiring, during her lifetime, the interest and admiration of artists, scholars, filmmakers and writers who transported her aura far beyond the confines of musical theatre. Forty-six years on from her death, the Teatro alla Scala pays tribute to an artist who was inextricably linked to La Scala after performing 23 opera titles in 28 performances between 1950 and 1961, including 6 season openings.
Five contemporary creatives have been called upon to interpret the legend of Maria Callas: for fashion, designer Giorgio Armani presents a dress that aims to give shape to a voice; musician and composer Alvin Curran presents an unprecedented composition; for contemporary art, artists Latifa Echakhch, with a site specific intervention, and Francesco Vezzoli; the director Mario Martone presents a short film starring Sonia Bergamasco about Ingeborg Bachmann’s fascination for the soprano.
OPENING TIMES: Mon – Sun 9:30am – 5:30pm
