Henri Cartier Bresson: China 1948-49 | 1958
Mudec hosts an exhibition on Henri Cartier Bresson and his photojournalism from China. The show has been realised thanks to the collaboration of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation and brings together an exceptional corpus of photographs and archive documents by the French photojournalist: over 100 original prints together with publications of period magazines, documents, and letters.
An excursus that recounts two key moments in the history of China: the fall of the Kuomintang and the establishment of the communist regime (1948-1949) and Mao Zedong’s “Great Leap Forward” (1958).
An important moment in the history of world photojournalism, experienced through the personal approach of the artist Cartier-Bresson, who was the first to highlight – through the eye of his lens – important themes of change in contemporary Chinese history, succeeding in presenting the Western world with aspects kept hidden by regime propaganda such as the exploitation of human resources and the omnipresence of the militias.
