Joseph Beuys: The Box as a Thinking Space
Montrasio Arte and MCA – Mario Cucinella Architects present the second chapter of their collaboration during Milano Art Week. Following a previous exhibition dedicated to Antonio Ottomanelli, this show explores the shared environmental concerns of Joseph Beuys and Mario Cucinella. Both are pioneers in integrating sustainability into their work, aiming to improve the world. A key piece, “Intuition” (1968), features an empty wooden box in a plexiglass case, symbolizing the origin, boundaries, and meaning of art. This sacred, reliquary-like quality is a recurring theme in Beuys’s work, reflecting his commitment to environmental activism. Works like “Celtic” (1971) and “Capri Battery” (1985) showcase the box as a space for protection, energy, and ritual, emphasizing Beuys’s role as a theorist and activist who connected art to real-life experiences and issues.
