Kimsooja: To Breathe – The Flags
Galleria Raffaella Cortese presents the South Korean conceptual artist Kimsooja’s fourth exhibition at the gallery since 2014. Kimsooja sees nomadism as a natural human state. She is a multidisciplinary artists, using performance, video, photography and installation. She is interested in dualism, between yin and yang, life and death, location and dislocation. Her work reflects and develops upon issues of life, art and politics.
At the space at Via Stradella 4 Kimsooja presents a video To Breathe – The Flags, where she superimposes and crossfades two hundred and forty six national flags, which merge together to become indistinguishable and emptying them of any symbology of nationhood. A blurring of national identities.
To Breathe – Zone of Nowhere is presented at Via Stradella 1 and consists of video stills from To Breathe – The Flags, visitors are invited to walk though the installation of twelve moving flags, asking them to reflect upon the idea of going beyond and between national boundaries, calling for coexistence, solidarity and respect.
