Matisse Mesnil: Sutura
“Sutura” presents a new body of work by Matisse Mesnil, exploring surface as a site of tension, transformation and inscription. Working across steel, monotype and installation, the artist develops a restrained visual language based on welding, engraving and layering processes, where repetition and duration play a central role.
The exhibition unfolds around the idea of the line as a threshold—both boundary and point of convergence—drawing from topographical references such as volcanic ridges and mountainous landscapes. Mesnil’s works evoke unstable terrains shaped by latent forces, where emergence and concealment coexist.
Minimal variations, rhythmic sequences and serial gestures define the works, inviting a slow and attentive perception. Repetition operates as a condition rather than a method, emphasising time, resistance and material memory.
Spatial interventions extend these concerns into the exhibition environment, transforming the viewer’s position into that of an active participant. Structures such as “L’Abri” (2026) function as thresholds rather than shelters, while serial elements suggest both natural formations and systems of control.
Positioned between painting and sculpture, gesture and process, Sutura reflects on continuity and rupture, where the act of joining does not resolve division but sustains it as a state of tension.
