Piero Gilardi and Regina José Galindo: El Teatro Subalterno
The gallery presents a group show displaying works by Piero Gilardi – a visual artist born in Turin, as well as works by Regina José Galindo – a Guatemalan performance artist specialized in body art.
Their works – collective animations and performances – share an equal origin: the spirit of complaint and claim. What the show at Prometeogallery however displays, is a rather unknown chapter of the artists’ works, in which they metaphorically meet on the grounds of confronting themselves with the Latin American culture and history.
The presented series of theatrical animations by Gilardi are inspired by his time in Nicaragua, where he moved in the beginning of the 80s, after the years of the active political militancy. Further, other animations showing the Indian reservations of Akwesasne along the Canadian border and in the tribe Samburu of Barsaloy in Kenya are on display in the show.
Both artists deal with the topic of claiming land or tenure of populations and the topic of colonization and exploitation.metaphorically meet on the grounds of confronting themselves with the Latin American culture and history. What unites the two artists in this exhibition is their use of theater as a medium to aesthetically demonstrate a population fighting for development and ownership.
